William J. Bennett, rightwing crackpot:
"I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could
-- if that were your sole purpose - you could abort every black baby in
this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an
impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your
crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching,
extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky."
That's an interesting idea. Remembering, now, that it is illegal in an
internet debate to invoke Adolf Hitler, I would like to make a couple of
comments on this... um... comment.
First of all, it's nice to hear people being honest with their
opinions. If all of the bigots, racists and chauvinists in the world
were so tactless, we'd have a much easier time spotting them. There
would be no hidden agenda to ferret out from our politicians, as
everything would be out on their sleeves.
Next up, let us examine the basis of this comment. In the United
States, it has long been a fact that black people are convicted and
jailed at a greater rate than whites. So, on the face of it, committing
genocide would lower the overall crime rate, right?
Um, well, no. There are three major factors that would get in the way
here that Bill seems wont to ignore. Number one on the list is the part
where a forced abortion would be a violent crime in and of itself. So
there's that going against him. Number two is the fact that numerous
studies have been done showing that blacks don't get very fair trials in
the U.S. Death row inmates are often given mistrials because, for
example, their public defenders slept through their trials. So maybe
the "relative crime rate by ethnicity" is a little misleading.
The third part, much less obvious, is that the american economy
desperately needs uneducated poor people to do all of its menial labour
at cut rate prices. The whole thing is balanced on having hordes of
unemployed people who will work for minimum wage because that's the best
they can get. Poor, uneducated people are more likely to turn to crime.
Now look at the situation in the United States. Through all sorts of
tricks and traps, a large portion of the black population of the United
States is kept poorly educated and poor. They're blocked from voting,
they're still segregated in schools and they just can't seem to break in
to colleges and universities at equal levels.
The point I'm making here is that Adolf J. Bennett... oops ... I mean,
William J. Bennett has missed the point. Even if all of the blacks in
the entire country picked up and moved to Mexico, the United States
would simply fill in the lower classes with other poor people (even
whites, if necessary) on which the entire economic mess depends for its
wealth generation. If they had to pay a decent wage and give health
benefits to the 50 million people at the bottom of the economic pyramid,
they'd have to completely rewire their economy.
And those new poor people you'd create? You'd find that they're likely
to have exactly the same crime rate.

Ethics Test
===========

This test only has one question, but it's a very important one. By
giving an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally. No
one else will know, so you won't be fooling anyone but yourself if you
give anything but a truthful answer. The test features an unlikely,
completely fictional situation in which you will have to make a
decision. Remember, your answer needs to be honest, yet spontaneous.
Please read slowly and thoughtfully, giving due consideration to each
line.
Here's the situation:
You are in Florida; Miami to be specific. There is chaos all around you
caused by a hurricane with severe flooding. This is a flood of Biblical
proportions. You are a photojournalist working for a major newspaper,
and you're caught in the middle of this epic disaster. The situation is
nearly hopeless. You're trying to shoot career-making photos. There
are houses and people swirling around you, some disappearing under the
water. Nature is unleashing all of its destructive fury.
Suddenly you see a man floundering in the water. He is fighting for his
life, trying not to be taken down with the debris. You move closer...
somehow the man looks familiar. You suddenly realize who it is: George
W. Bush, President of the United States!! At the same time you notice
that the raging waters are about to take him under... forever.
With G. W. Bush's life in peril, you can possibly shoot a dramatic
Pulitzer Prize winning photo, documenting the death of one of the
world's most powerful men, or save his life and become a hero.
So here's the question, and please give an honest answer:
Would you select high contrast colour film, or would you go with the
classic simplicity of black and white?
