Hey all
Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. Or if you're in school right
now, it should just be about time for mid-terms. To you I say, "Yech."
I'm surprised we didn't receive any comments about last week's Deep
Thought Korner. When it went through the first Editor's pass, we didn't
know what to think. But then we thought "it's good to get existential
once in a while." Keeps you limber. Then we thought "Editing is hard.
Let's get a snack." Then we had a snack. It was apple pie. And lo, it
was tasty.
Perhaps Greg is all loopy from that kooky Californian air. Goes
straight to your noggin, it does.
Random Quick Non-Sensical Aside Tip of The Week: If you're working
thirty hours of voluntary overtime a week, you care about your job just
a wee bit too much. You need to RELAX. Not caring is the first step.
Then go out and enjoy the sunshine.
And I thought I was going to be short on comments this week.
Until next time,
Seek. Locate. EXTERMINATE!

And now, the rest of the story...

London, England. July 7, 2005.
More than 50 people were killed when four bombs were detonated in
London's transit system. The people killed, having been more or less
randomly chosen by happening to board an unlucky conveyance, were as
innocent as human beings are going to get.
We find this saddening. I didn't know any of the people, and I'm sure
that it would be much more painful if I did. At the moment though, the
hardest part of this is getting used to the fact that I found these
deaths so much harder to take than the many other innocent deaths that
occur around the world.
In Africa, I have learned from reliable sources, a child dies of extreme
poverty every three seconds. The powers of corporate globalization,
which encourage the growing of cash crops like tobacco over food crops
like wheat, cause those deaths. Do the math. That works out to 576
times the number of deaths as the London bombing, all innocent and
entirely preventable, every single day.
In Iraq, the invasion of which is the likely cause of -- or at least
excuse for -- these terrorists acts, over one hundred thousand
documented innocent lives have been lost. If a suitcase bomb on a
London subway is indiscriminate and cruel, think of the margin of error
involved in dropping a 500-pound bomb on an equally crowded city.
And yet, for reasons we can guess at, those hundreds of thousands of
deaths aren't allocated nearly the amount of news time that the fifty
deaths in London get. Sad, isn't it? Not only that so many innocents
are dying, but that our news media is allowed to tell us which ones are
really important, and which ones aren't worthy of our attention.
Does it take a genius to realize that *all* of the killing of innocent
people is connected? That watching your family members being murdered
by a nebulous set of foreign powers leads people to madness and
reciprocal random cruelty? That, just maybe, if so many innocent people
weren't being killed below the media radar, then people wouldn't be
dying above the radar either?
I am not, it should be clear, "blaming the victims." The people who
died in London did not deserve their fate any more than you, dear
reader, or I would deserve it. But we can not go on ignoring the
devastation being wrought on other people and then throwing up our hands
in confusion when they began lashing out with their own devastation.
Greg.

Look Out For The Old Ladies
===========================
Thanks to Linda G.'s Geriatric Comedy Parade
Sunday's sermon was entitled "Forgive Your Enemies." Toward the end of
the service, the Minister asked, "How many of you have forgiven your
enemies?"
Eighty percent of the congregation held up their hands.
The Minister then repeated his question.
All responded this time except one small elderly lady.
"Mrs. Jones, are you not willing to forgive your enemies?" the minister
asked.
"I don't have any," she replied, smiling sweetly.
"Mrs. Jones, That is very unusual. How old are you?"
"Ninety-eight," she replied.
"Oh, Mrs. Jones, would you please come down in front and tell us all how
a person can live ninety-eight years and not have an enemy in the
world."
The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, faced the
congregation, and said: "I outlived the bitches."
