Hey all
I trust everyone had a great Canada Day this past weekend. I forgot to
mention that a bunch of people were going to be on Parliament Hill.
Perhaps you saw us if you were up there, we were the ones wearing red
and white.
Some week's I've got stuff. Some weeks...
Until next time,
I'm so smart. I must be a child progeny.

And now, the rest of the story...

We're almost finished witnessing the destruction I inflicted upon the
fine historical objects of Belgium. And lordy, did they deserve that
thrashing. Next week... more themed punches, closer to home!

The soul of a gift.
It's a difficult thing to explain. I've been trying to put it in to
words for ages, but I always seem to be missing something.
First of all, you'll have to allow me -- an avowedly nonreligious person
-- to wave my hands a bit when I assume that we all have a vague idea of
what a "soul" is. For now we'll take it simply to mean that a soul is
that bit of inner meaning and purpose with which certain things are
imbued.
When a three year old child picks dandelions off his front lawn and
gives them to his mother, it's largely irrelevant that the dandelions
have virtually no physical value. They do however have a meaning, a
soul, in the sense that the child *gave* such meaning to them by
intending that they be a gift.
So we have to imagine that there are two "givings" inherent in any
gift. I suppose you might divide it in to the "making" of the gift,
and the "giving" of the gift, but I would divide it differently.
The first and most important part of the gift is the soul placed in it
by the giver, sometime near when the idea of the gift is first
conjured. So long as the giver is giving of his or her own free will,
unfettered by demands of the receiver or interested bystanders, the gift
will always have this soul. The second part of the gift is the physical
portion of the gift on which its soul will ride, through the process of
acquiring and physically giving it. Most simply put: there is the
thing and there is the spirit in which the thing was given.
If the receiver makes demands upon the giver in order to alter the gift,
this takes away the ability of the giver to put a soul in the gift.
This spirit is a precarious thing, easily crumpled. This is where I
start having trouble explaining myself.
If the receiver makes demands upon the giver in order to alter the gift,
this takes away the right of the giver to truly give. The soul of the
gift ceases to be attached to the gift. The gift is simply a thing, an
item acquired with effort by the giver, given to the receiver, but
without meaning. Certainly, the receiver has received something more
practical, or appropriate, or aesthetically pleasing, than the original
gift. But the alterations made to it have caused it to be, in the sense
of the soul, anything but "of the giver". The receiver will *think*
that something more pleasing has resulted, for why let the giver waste
effort on something not maximally desirable? Yet, because the object is
now detached of its spirit, the receiver will feel an inexplicable
emptiness about it, and the giver feel strangely disgruntled at the
effort expended.
I wonder if that's in any way clear to anyone.
Greg.

A woman calls her boss one morning and hells him that she is staying
home because she is not feeling well.
"What's the matter?" he asks.
"I have a case of anal glaucoma," she says in a week voice.
"What the hell is anal glaucoma?"
"I can't see my ass coming into work today."
