Well, kiddies, we've got some reading to do.

Yeah, exactly. What the minutes of these meetings tell us, without any
doubt, is that the Bush administration wanted to attack Iraq. The
minutes tell us that they couldn't find any justification for attacking
Iraq. The minutes tell us that they were determined to attack,
regardless, and were seeking to make up a justification.
Just to be clear: they knew that Iraq was no threat; they knew that
Iraq wasn't harbouring terrorists; they knew that Iraq had none of the
weapons of mass destruction; they knew that there were no humanitarian
grounds for invading Iraq. All of the excuses that they gave in the
lead up to the invasion and attempted conquest of Iraq were lies and,
more importantly, the administration itself *knew* they were telling
lies. There is no other reasonable explanation for these memos.
But, seriously, did anyone believe otherwise? I could see Americans,
especially those living in New York, being confused and scared and only
having Fox News and NBC to listen to. I could see such people thinking
that Iraq actually had something to with 9/11, based on the repeated
assertions and implications of Bush Administration spokespeople. But
could anyone else, anywhere else in the world, really believe that there
was anything even remotely legitimate about the US/UK-sponsored invasion
of Iraq? Here was a nation, Iraq, sitting atop the world's largest
untapped supply of petroleum, hobbled and starved by a decade of
sanctions and continuous bombing, now being invaded by the world's two
largest users of oil.
What did you think the war was about?
Wars are almost *always* about resources, not principles. They're
always about someone trying to take something from someone else. We can
delude ourselves, as the soldiers and other citizenry must always be
misled, to think that the wars we won were fought for noble reasons. We
can say that World War II was some special mission against some
especially evil regime, or that the great war before it wasn't about
colonies and expanding empires. In the end, though, it always comes
down to resources. In Israel and Palestine, it's water. In Iraq and
Afghanistan, it's oil. In other places it can be tobacco and grain and
livestock. In Haiti, it's cheap labour.
It's a very, very rare time when a war doesn't take place because
someone is taking something from someone else -- or two groups are
fighting over something which belongs to neither of them. What's we've
seen in these "Downing Street" minutes is that this war is no different
from any other.
