What is NUTS?

NUTS is a high-tech social group for anybody who wants to come out and have a good time and meet new people. We are based at Alcatel-Lucent and have social partnerships with other social groups across the city and we are all invited to each other's events. Everybody across the city is invited to NUTS events and welcome to join the mailing list.

Is NUTS some kind of acronym?

Sure is, Chester: Newhire and Undergraduate Team Spirit.

Where is the NUTS homepage?

Most likely you know it already, since this is where the FAQ is located. If you are reading this offline, the homepage is located at http://nutsevents.topcities.com/.

If you're within Alcatel-Lucent, you might as well use the mirror on Torpedo since it's faster, has no ads, and contains the full picture archive.

Is NUTS a good way to meet new people?

Absolutely! NUTS sends its newsletter to people all over the Ottawa area. We organize events and parties all the time, and lots of people show up to have a good time.

Check out the gigantic (and still growing!) NUTS Picture Archive to see photographs of some recent NUTS events and all the people that attend these fun happenings.

Just how big is the NUTS mailing list?

Way back in January 1999, the mailing list contained 200 subscribers. At it's peak, the count was nearly 900. Today, it's more like 350.

How do I join the NUTS mailing list?

Joining the mailing list is easy. The mailing list is not restricted to Alcatel-Lucent employees and co-ops so everyone in the Ottawa region can participate in events. To join the mailing list: Send an e-mail to nutsinfo$yahoo.ca and say how you'd like to join the mailing list.

How can I remove myself from the NUTS mailing list?

The question you should be asking yourself right now is "Why would I want to be removed from this excellent mailing list?" If, after pondering this for several hours, and you still come to the conclusion that you'd no longer like to hear about great parties and fun activities, then send an email to nutsinfo$yahoo.ca and say that you no longer wish to receive the weekly newsletter.

How do NUTS events happen?

Because NUTS is mostly comprised of co-operative students, things occur in four month cycles. Events are organized by an ever-changing group of fun volunteers, including co-ops and full-timers. Everyone is invited to join the NUTS committee to contribute, criticise, organize and hang out. Our planning sessions take place once a week over lunch and sometimes over beer and wings after work. Whether you are an outgoing social butterfly or a person who would rather work behind the scenes, the NUTS committee has many roles that are perfect for a diverse group of people. Joining the committee is a great way to meet people right away and we work together to build the NUTS social empire!

How do I join the NUTS planning committee?

Want to participate in planning events like term parties? Have a vision for the NUTS web site? Want to get chummy with Byward Market bar managers and never wait in line anywhere ever again? Of course you do!

The easiest way is to just show up to one of the committee meetings.

If you can't make it to a meeting (or don't work at Alcatel-Lucent), send an email to the NUTS committee and let them know how you'd like to help out.

What kind of roles are available on the committee?

All sorts of roles are available: Head NUT, Treasurer, Meeting Recorder, Photographer, Webmaster, etc.

Where does the NUTS committee have its meetings?

Currently, there is no weekly meeting scheduled.

Do I have to be on the planning committee to attend the committee meetings?

Nope! Anyone can drop by and contribute ideas. Well, it kind of helps if you work for Alcatel-Lucent. :)

Do I have to be on the planning committee to submit an event?

Nope! Everybody is welcome to add an event to the newsletter.

What is SLACC, PARTE, SFU, SCORE and WATPUB?

These groups are NUTS's social partners.

NUTS has social partnerships with all of these groups. This means that we invite them to our events and they invite us to theirs.

Do I have to belong to a planning committee (NUTS, PARTE, etc.) to come to an event?

There isn't ever a question of membership since membership is FREE and the perks and fun are endless. Everybody and anybody are welcome at any event. You don't have to work at Alcatel-Lucent to get on the NUTS mailing list. So feel free to forward the newsletter to your friends all around Ottawa and invite them to join us.

What is the name of the NUTS newsletter?

The Juice and Gin.

How can I receive the NUTS newsletter?

Once you have subscribed to the NUTS mailing list you will receive the newsletter every week when it is published.

Publication is usually consistent, and the newsletter goes out Tuesday evening (usually between 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm), weather permitting.

What does the newsletter contain?

The newsletter is our way to get information out to everyone. Usually, it contains important news like when the next big event is going to happen. It has various sections, messages from members of the NUTS committee (important people like the newsletter editor, the NUTS photographer, the webmaster, and event organizers).

Event organizers have details of their happening included, such as what the event is, where it is happening, where to get tickets (if required) and who to contact for more information.

The newsletter also has a classified section, a humour section, and a collection of goofy quotes culled from all the odd things the NUTS committee members spout during their wacky weekly planning meetings.

In addition, the newsletter has room for editorial pieces submitted by any of the readers.

Who can submit an article or event to the NUTS newsletter?

The short answer is ANYBODY and EVERYBODY! It's a very simple process of writing a short article and emailing it to the Newsletter Editor by the submission deadline of Tuesday at 4:00pm.

What is a BOTP, MOTP or EOTP?

These are very important acronyms:

These are basically gigantic get-togethers to celebrate the major milestones in a given term. The date and location of each of these events are announced in the NUTS newsletter.

For those readers who were born before 1975, BOTP can also mean Battle Of The Planets. Ask PhotoDude to explain the importance of this show sometime... :)
